How I Choose the Perfect Tank Size for My Flowerhorn Fish?

Selecting an ideal tank size to suit my Flowerhorn fish was an important measure that I took towards making my fish healthy and happy. As soon as I ever made the decision of acquiring this beautiful and unique species in my aquarium, I realized that it was all about adequate space. Flowerhorns are big and energetic fish, so being informed about their specifics, I managed to find a tank that will fit their needs and enable them to settle and perform well.

At the beginning, I wanted to choose the smaller tank because of the considerations of space and the FL budget, but I conducted research, and I noticed that Flowerhorns could develop pretty large (it was now up to a foot in length), and they needed a lot of opportunity to swim. A small crowded tank would not only limit them in terms of growth but may result into them behaving violently and being stressed. I found out that the recommended tank size of single Flowerhorn should be approximately 75 gallons. This offers sufficient moving about space to the fish, ensures quality of water and lowers territorial tension.

Having chosen a bigger tank I also needed to think about the filtration system. Being a sloppy eater, flowerhorns do generate lots of garbage hence a good filter was necessary in order to maintain a clean and healthy water. I bought a strong filter system that is used in a large tank which allowed the water parameters to remain stable and lessen the occurrence of water changes. It was essential to ensure that the quality of water remained high since the water would have resulted in sickness or faded color in the fish.

Another important factor I gave very keen consideration was temperature control. Flowerhorns live in warm waters and the temperatures are normally between 78F to 84F (25C to 29C). To ensure this, I put in place a well-tested heater that has a thermostat and check on the water temperature frequently. Stable temperature also increased resilience and promoted the immune system of the fish keeping it fresh and healthy.

I was careful about the decorating the tank. My idea was to have such an environment that resembled natural habitat yet enough free space where the Flowerhorn would feel free to swim comfortably. My substrate was selected to be smooth and at no point sharp rocks or accessories that might injure the fish were used. I also ensured that the tank installation was secure because Flowerhorns are curious as well as may engage in digging activities.

When my Flowerhorn first came to his new home, I realize how the large tank he was able to walk around and find his territory without strain. Its colors and patterns were in full view and was thrilling to watch the fish show. As it expanded over time, the tank size remained sufficient, which made me feel that I have not made a wrong decision. I also discovered that when the fish has enough space, it is not as aggressive or non-interactive.

Flowerhorn can live much more than a decade provided they are well taken care of and therefore getting the right tank is very crucial in the initial stages. It does not only refer to accommodation of their size but their future size growth and their behavior as well. Giving them a tank size that fits will assist in their long and healthy life as these fish are beautiful.
